fuse board upgrades below. It explains about both and is written in an easy to read format without too much technical jargon. Any questions please ask!'
What is a house rewire?
An electrical house rewire is the complex job in upgrading your old electrics with new wiring, assessories, fixtures and fittings. It also includes installing a new up to date fuse board (also known as a consumer unit).
New cables are ran in for each circuit, Earthing and bonding are upgraded.
You can also choose how many sockets (plugs) you want in each room, how many lights etc and the new position of these.
It also includes other electrical upgrades you want for your home, including outdoor power/lighting, smoke alarms, extractor fans etc
It is quite a disruptive job, as it is needed to be done in every room in the house. Carpets need to be lifted, access under floorboards need to be accessed to run new cables, walls need to be chased out for new cables to be buried within them. However I do my best to make it a stress free task for you.
A rewire is carried out in 2 phases, the first fix and second fix.
First Fix:
This is the messy phase of a rewire, Floorboards are lifted for new cable runs, old cables are removed, chases are made into walls to run in new feeds to sockets and switches.
Second Fix:
This phase involves connecting up new sockets and switches etc into the newly laid cable. wiring up. Also installing the new fuse board. After completion the property is tested and a certificate is issued.
The cost of a rewire varies from property to property, factors such as room sizes, number of rooms, number of sockets/switches, specification etc
Some things to consider:
-
Number of sockets (plugs) wanted in each room
-
The number of lighting points
-
Smoke detector alarms (required by law)
-
Specification of assessories ( standard white fittings or chrome plated etc)
-
Outdoor power (outdoor socket, secuirty lighting etc)
-
Room for future expansion ( Electric vehicle charging points, etc )
But don't worry all these can be discussed and advised on during the online quote survey

What is a fuse board upgrade?
A fuse board (also known as a consumer unit or fuse box) is the most important electrical fixture on your home. It provides each circuit with safety devices to prevent electrical shock or fires under a fault.
Inside a fuse board you have MCB's ,RCD, RCBO’s these are your safety devices for each circuit.
Upgrading your fuse board is the process of removing your old fuse board and replacing it with a new up to date modern unit with safety devices up to current standards. Checking main earth, bonding and then testing to ensure safety.
Usually the metre tails ( the incoming supply cables into the fuse board will be upgraded at the same time)
New fuse board are installed up to current wiring standards 18th edition.
New fuse boards:
-
Are made of metal (fire proof)
-
Have either RCBO’s or RCD’s protecting cables
-
Have a surge protective device (SPD) to protect expensive electronic equipment in your home.
-
Metre tails upgraded
-
Mains isolator fitted (where required)
-
Main earth upgraded.
-
Spare ways on the fuse board to give room for expansion in future - EV chargers, more circuits in future etc
-
Bonding checked, upgraded where necessary
-
Fully tested and certificate given
